Happy New Year

and there is a rat in my house.

I am soliciting your advice.

I really don't want to use the snap mouse trap because of obvious reasons. I have a dog whose clumsy owner will probably step on that thing before he sniffs the bait. Besides, it isn't very humane.

I will probably eat the poison before Noah does too.

It is not the most pleasant project to kick off a new year, but, what can I say? So what pet/human safe ways are there to get rid of house mice/rats?

The Year of the Rat isn't until 2008, in case you are wondering.

Happy New Year to you too! And sorry about the mouse. There are numerous humane traps available, but I'm not sure if you'll find them in your local grocery store. I see them all day long at the local feed store where I buy the horses' food.

A kitty.

A very BIG kitty.

Noah will love it.

Yes, a cat is my first choice since its pretty natural - you can borrow one of mine for a few days if you want.

But Mike is right, there are some humane traps.

Scary to think I have a pet rat isn't it?

Ewww! I hate mice. They freak me out! I've tried the normal mousetraps with cheese or peanut butter and have never caught one. D-CON works good, but you'll definitely need to make sure you put it where your dog CANNOT get to it!
A cat is an excellent plan of action..if your dog can handle not being the baby anymore! ha

Noah runs off stray cats when he sees them, but I really don't know what he would do if I brought one home as a pet.

Here's a fool-proof plan. Go to the local zoo and ask to collect urine specimens from their larger feline predators. A male lion or a cheetah would do quite nicely. Or, a female tiger in heat is also supposed to be quite effective.

Once home, liberally sprinkle the liquid on all the interior alls of your house. Before you know it, the rodent will pack his bags and leave.

It may take several months to get used to the smell, but after a while you don't even notice it. Noah will probably try to mask the scent with his own, but at least you'll be rid of the rat.

Or, you could go your local "Rent a Weasel" store and let half a dozen or so of the little furry critters loose in your house for a few days.

I think there's another one that involves very large speakers playing Barry Manilow backwards at full volume for at least 24 hours. But sometimes, while it almost always gets rid of any rodents in the neighborhood, that leads to the need for an exorcist, so that's a net-loss solution.

I'll give it a little more thought. I wonder what Rosie O'Donnell does?

ah, that was, "interior walls".

LOL, Gary.

The object here is to exterminate the mice, not humans.

I googled "humane rat trap" and found page after page.

I have cats and no rats or even mice.

Except for the pet white rat. I forgot about her.
